Anatomy and physiology together form the foundation on which every other subject in pharmacy is built. A student who understands the structure of the human body and the way its systems work will find pharmacology, pathophysiology, pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy noticeably easier to learn. The laboratory is where this understanding is converted from theory into lived experience, and that is the purpose of this manual.
When we began designing this manual, we set ourselves three goals. The first was to produce a practical book that respected the actual reality of an Indian pharmacy college laboratory — limited specimens, shared microscopes, a wide range of student preparation levels and a busy academic calendar. The second was to integrate anatomy and physiology as they are integrated in real life, rather than teaching them as separate experiments. The third was to make every experiment relevant to pharmacy practice, so that the student never has to ask "why am I learning this?".
The manual is offered in two volumes. The present Volume 1 covers Units I through VI: laboratory orientation, microscopy, cell biology and histology, the skeletal and muscular systems, cardiovascular physiology and respiratory physiology. Volume 2 covers the remaining units of the practical syllabus — digestive, nervous, renal, endocrine, reproductive and integrative physiology — as well as a closing unit on clinical and pharmaceutical applications.
We are grateful to our colleagues in the departments of pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences and clinical pharmacy who reviewed earlier drafts of the manuscript, to the technical staff who pilot-tested several of the experiments, and to our students whose questions over many semesters shaped the way each experiment is now written. We hope that this manual will serve the present generation of pharmacy students well, and that any errors or omissions which remain will be brought to our attention so that future editions can be improved.
